2016 Autism Campus Inclusion (ACI) Leadership Academy!

The Autistic Self Advocacy Network is now accepting applications for the 2016 Autism Campus Inclusion (ACI) Leadership Academy! The ACI summer leadership training prepares Autistic students to create systems change on their college campuses. View and download the application here.

Accepted applicants will travel to Washington, DC and participate in advocacy training at Gallaudet University from May 28 to June 4, 2016. Participants will acquire valuable skills in community organizing, policy formation, and activism. Travel and lodging are fully covered by ASAN.

Applicants must identify as Autistic and be current college students with at least one year remaining before graduation. The Autistic Self Advocacy Network will cover travel and lodging costs for all ACI students. We especially encourage students of color, LGBT students, students with intellectual disabilities, AAC users, and students from other or multiply marginalized communities to apply.

To apply, please submit a completed application by February 21, 2016 to Natalia Rivera Morales at NRiveraMorales@autisticadvocacy.org with the subject line “2016 ACI Application.”

In fact, the obesity rate is 58% higher among people with disabilities compared to the general population. Becoming fit and staying fit is a combination of nutrition and exercise. It is easy to grab those bags of chips and difficult to find accessible exercises. Barriers like these are inherent obstacles. This webinar will give you some resources to get you started including easy nutrition tricks, exercise options and technology to help you get fit in 2016.

 The Arc of Florida & The Florida Developmental Disabilities Council will host 2016 Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day on February 18, 2016. Exhibitors will be located on the 2nd Floor Rotunda to display and share information and services available to persons & families with developmental disabilities.  There will also be a program in the courtyard (weather permitting). You will have an opportunity to visit with legislators to share your opinions regarding issues affecting persons with developmental disabilities.

Culinary Concepts (www.gr8food.net) will host a two-day job fair with the goal of hiring 100 employees to fill positions at its five Southwest Florida restaurants: Pazzo! Cucina Italiana in Naples, Chops City Grill in Naples, Yabba Island Grill in Naples, Chops City Grill in Bonita Springs and Blue Water Bistro in Estero. The job fair will commence from noon to 3 p.m. on Oct. 21 at Chops City Grill in Naples for positions based in that area, and on Oct. 22 from noon to 3 p.m. at Chops City Grill in Bonita Springs for Bonita Springs and Estero positions. Attendees should bring a resume and should be prepared to complete applications. Qualifying applicants will be invited to participate in one-on-one interviews with a Culinary Concepts manager or chef during the event.

The Office of Community Outreach would like to invite you to save the date for our upcoming Lecture Series on raising awareness of disabilities, coming up on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at the Cohen Center Ballroom at FGCU. Our speaker, Cori Bright-Kerrigan, works actively with students with disabilities here at FGCU. A panel discussion will be held.  This free event will begin with a mingling reception at 6:30pm and the lecture will start at 7:00pm.
